Hydrocarbons, or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) can be solids, liquids or gases.
Usually found on brownfield sites, sites used for industrial applications and former petrol stations. Hydrocarbon contaminated sites can often require some serious remediation of the existing ground on site. A hydrocarbon membrane is then installed to prevent the ingress of any residual contamination. The inhalation of hydrocarbons can have major health impacts, potentially resulting in death if inhaled over a prolonged time. Luckily the majority of hydrocarbons have a strong odour, like petrol or diesel.
